Tupac Biopic Wraps Filming in Las Vegas; Movie Expected to be Released in September

After months of filming, the cast of the upcoming Tupac Shakur biopic has finally wrapped, putting the project in post-production mode. According to Global Grind, the cast wrapped up the final scenes in Las Vegas earlier this week. Producer LT Hutton shared a few videos of Demetrius Shipp Jr., who portrays the late rapper, riding around with Dominic L. Santana (Suge Knight) on Instagram. Directed by Benny Boom, the story will highlight Shakur’s upbringing to his rise in hip-hop and Hollywood. Boom promised fans the biopic will highlight his family’s connections to the Black Panther party and his relationship with his mother Afeni Shakur. The production team was also honored by Lawrence Weekly, the Commissioner of Clark County for their work in Las Vegas on the film.

The movie is expected to be released in September in correlation to the 20th anniversary of the rapper’s death and the All Eyez On Me album.

According to Deadline, John Singleton was brought on board to direct in 2014, but left the project earlier over differences with the studio over how the story of Shakur’s life would be told. Music video director Benny Boom was ultimately hired to replace Singleton. Boom, who worked with the late rapper’s estate and family for All Eyez On Me, told Billboard, “We’re starting from before he was born. His parents were Black Panthers. You see the struggles of his youth, his relationship with his mother, father figures that were in and out of his life, and what he developed into as a man from that. It humanizes him.”
