2018 Oscar Nominations: Record-breaking Nominations for Diverse Films

The Oscars race is now officially on after the Academy of Arts and Sciences announced their list of nominees early this morning. There were a record-breaking 15 nominations in various categories for diverse films with African-American actors or themes. There were some surprises such as Jordan Peele’s Get Out which garnered nominations for directing, writing and Best Picture, as well as a Best Actor nomination for star Daniel Kaluuya. For Peele, he becomes only the third person to be nominated in those categories with his first film.

Dee Rees made Oscar history by being the first African-American woman nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Mudbound. She shares her nomination with Virgil Williams. Mudbound was adapted for the screen from Hillary Jordan's best-selling novel of the same name.

Denzel Washington (Best Actor in a Leading Role for Roman J. Israel, Esq.) and Octavia Spencer (Best Actress in a Supporting Role, The Shape of Water) are up for consideration again with Mary J. Blige receiving her first nomination for her performance in Mudbound. Spencer and Blige are both in the race for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Blige, along with Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson, was also nominated for Best Original Song (“Mighty River”) for Mudbound.

Kevin Wilson, Jr.'s riveting My Nephew Emmett about Emmett Till was nominated for Best Short Film (Live Action). Dekalb Elementary by Reed Van Dyke was also nominated for Best Short Film (Live Action), a riveting story inspired by a 911 call placed during a school shooting incident in a predominantly black school in Atlanta, Georgia. The personal journey of the 1992 murder of a young black man depicted in Strong Island was nominated for Best Documentary (Feature). Yance Ford directed and produced the film with Joslyn Barnes.

Mudbound and Strong Island are currently streaming on Netflix. Get Out is available on HBO.

The nomination ceremony was live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater with Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis. The Oscars ceremony will be held on March 4 on ABC and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
