A few days ago, the well-known rapper Snoop Dogg called for a boycott of the remake of the mini-series ‘Roots’ airing on the History Channel, saying it is racist and offensive to people of color. You can check out what he had to say here in his own words. I’ll warn you. Snoop was direct and didn’t hold back.
Commentator Roland Martin, host of TV One's News One Now, shot back a few hours ago with his own thoughts and response to Snoop. Martin didn't hold back either.
(In a few days, I'll offer up my own thoughts/opinions/facts on the whole issue of “slave narratives” in film and TV. I’m still doing some research on this, so look out for that in a few days.)
As human beings, we all want to be heard, but if not checked, we can easily find ourselves going down a rabbit hole, one that is difficult to get out of. So, as this "slave movies/no slave movies" debate continues, let’s do our best to really listen to one another and strive to find areas where we can mutually agree.
Most importantly, do your research. It’s too easy to get caught up and repeat a meme. And as Dr. Terryl Ross, my friend and co-founder of BlackCinemadb.com, wrote in his recent blog post, we are “46 Million Strong” which means, as black folks, we have the potential to do even more when it comes to telling our stories.
That is all. For now.
