Nate Parker’s New Mystery Film Project Acquired by 'Straight Outta Compton' Producers

The big movie deals just keep coming for Nate Parker, the director, writer and actor of the much-buzzed about Birth of a Nation. Legendary Pictures, known for such blockbusters as Straight Outta Compton, Jurassic World, Interstellar and Crimson Peak, has acquired an original feature film idea from Parker who will write, direct and produce it. There is no title but the story involved “creating a world” according to Deadline.

The “worlds” that Thomas Tull’s Legendary Pictures creates usually involve big budgets, big stars and big box office draws. Under the new ownership of China-based Wanda and Legendary’s Mary Parent, vice chairman of worldwide production, the Burbank-based film production company is looking to close a deal to land the rights to make Pokemon a live-action film based on the decades-old pocket monster game from Japan.

As for Parker's unnamed script, we will definitely be placing his mystery project on our radar.

Earlier this year, BB Film Productions and Bleiberg Entertainment announced they will produce Parker's screenplay Predilection to be directed by Marcio Garcia. The movie is inspired by Garcia’s short, “Predileção,” about a low-level criminal who meets a legendary thief during a brief jail stint. Together, they hatch a plan and assemble an international team for an elaborate bank robbery.

Uri Singer, Ehud Bleiberg and Parker are producing and Nicholas Donnermeyer is executive producer. Producers plan on a late 2016 start date.

“Nate is an incredibly talented storyteller and filmmaker,” Singer said. “It’s a fast-paced, twisting script with worldwide appeal.”

This fall, Fox Searchlight will release Parker’s Birth of a Nation on October 7, a film sure to receive various Oscar nods.
