‘Selma’ Cinematographer Bradford Young Wins Best Documentary Short at the LA Film Festival

Cinematographer Bradford Young won Best Documentary Short for Black America Again at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Winners were recently honored at a mid-morning brunch on the Festival Lawn hosted by LA Film Festival Drector Jennifer Cochis. Audience Awards were also presented for U.S. Fiction, World Fiction, Documentary, Nightfall and LA Muse categories. Audience Awards were also presented for Fiction Feature, Documentary Feature, Short Film and Web Series.

Black America Again is an abstract, artistic piece that shares a powerful collage of stunning visual messages. The 21-minute short film, produced by actor and hip-hop artist Common and Ava DuVernay, features several different scenes like Common rapping on an empty street with a drummer, a woman singing and standing at a memorial for Freddie Gray, and more. The track also features Stevie Wonder (not present in the film) singing the bridge.

The film was directed by Young with cinematography by Maceo Bishop and editing by Marc Thomas. The piece also complements Common's 2016 album of the same title.

Young is best known for his cinematic work on Pariah, Middle of Nowhere, Selma and Arrival for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Cinematography. Young’s latest cinematography project will be on the upcoming untitled Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film directed by Ron Howard.
